On Day 1, begin your journey from Haridwar, a city renowned for its religious significance, and drive towards Harsil, covering a distance of approximately 290 km. The drive, lasting around 8-9 hours, takes you through the picturesque landscapes of the Garhwal Himalayas, passing through Rishikesh, Chamba, and Uttarkashi. En route, enjoy the scenic beauty of the Bhagirathi River and the lush greenery. Upon arrival in Harsil, a quaint village known for its serene environment and apple orchards, check in at your guesthouse or campsite. Spend the evening exploring the village and acclimatizing to the altitude before enjoying an overnight stay.
The day begins early with a departure from Harsil to Gangotri, covering a short 25 km journey with packed breakfast. On arrival in Gangotri, visit the sacred Gangotri Temple to participate in the morning aarti and receive blessings. Before setting out on the trek from Gangotri (3,046m), it is customary to visit a small shrine located half a kilometre upstream. The pilgrimage trail starts just beyond the temple, where the last stands of forest give way to a well-maintained path following the river from east to west. The forest quickly thins out, revealing a landscape dominated by brown and grey tones, accented by the stream below and the striking mountains ahead.
The traditional trek’s first leg leads to Bhojbasa, 13 km away. However, due to the high starting altitude, progress can be slow. If acclimatization is a concern, it might be wise to break the journey at Chirbasa (3,350m). This spot, named for its small cluster of chir pines, offers a refreshing break in an otherwise stark landscape. Beyond Chirbasa, the valley broadens, unveiling views of snow-covered peaks to the south. The path to Bhojbasa (3,800m) is a gentle walk, heading almost directly southeast along the river, with the Bhagirathi peaks constantly guiding the way towards the sacred river’s source. Bhojbasa, the broadest part of the upper valley, provides an excellent campsite with breathtaking moonlit views of the Bhagirathi peaks. Overnight stay and dinner will be in Bhojbasa.
Begin the day early with a challenging trek from Bhojbasa to Gaumukh, the origin of the Ganges River. The trail is steep and demands careful navigation, but the effort is rewarded with the stunning sight of the Bhagirathi River emerging from the Gaumukh Glacier. The first four kilometers from Bhojbasa are surprisingly flat. Although the valley narrows, the path remains smooth above the river, bordered by a grassy meadow.
Follow the rugged path along the river’s edge to the base of Gaumukh (3,969m), and gaze up at the towering Shivaling Peak (6,543m) above. In autumn, the water is a shallow grey-blue stream, allowing you to wade to the middle. In summer, it’s best to stay on the banks. After exploring Gaumukh and enjoying a packed lunch, trek back to Bhojbasa. The return journey offers a new perspective on the breathtaking landscape. Upon arriving back in Bhojbasa, rest and relax after the strenuous day, spending the night in tents.
