What is Gartang Gali?

Gartang Gali is a narrow wooden walkway fixed to a vertical rock face high above the Jadh Ganga river. For centuries it was part of the trade route between Tibet and the Garhwal hills, used by traders carrying wool, salt and goods across the border. It fell out of use after 1962 and was restored and reopened to visitors in 2021. Today it is one of the most dramatic short walks in Uttarakhand.

How to reach

Drive up the Gangotri highway from Uttarkashi past Harsil to Lanka and Bhairon Ghati, a few kilometres before Gangotri. From the roadhead a short but steep trail leads to the start of the walkway. Permits are issued through the Gangotri National Park office, so plan this the day before. We help guests with taxis and the latest permit information.

What to expect

  • The walkway is safe with railings, but the drop is sheer. Not for anyone with a fear of heights.
  • The air is thin at this altitude. Walk slowly and carry water.
  • Rules on numbers, timings and fees change. Ask locally before you go.
  • Combine it with Gangotri Dham, the Nelang Valley or a night in Harsil.

Suggested plan

Day 1: drive from Uttarkashi to Harsil (73 km), explore the orchards and stay the night. Day 2: early start to Gartang Gali, then Gangotri darshan, and back to Uttarkashi by evening. Our Harsil tour package can include it.
