About Nelang

Nelang lies in the Gangotri National Park close to the India–China border. Before 1962 it was on the trade route to Tibet, and the old Gartang Gali cliff walkway is part of the same route. After decades of restriction the valley was opened to Indian tourists on day permits. With its bare brown slopes and blue sky, it looks more like Ladakh or Spiti than the green hills of Garhwal.

Permits and rules

  • A permit is needed for every visitor. It is issued through the district administration and Gangotri National Park.
  • Carry original ID. Only Indian nationals are allowed.
  • Visits are by day, with fixed entry and return times. Vehicle and group limits may apply.
  • Rules change from year to year. We share the latest process with our guests before they go.

How to plan it

Base yourself in Uttarkashi or Harsil. Arrange the permit a day in advance, start early for Bhairon Ghati, visit Nelang within the allowed hours and return to Harsil or Uttarkashi the same day. It pairs well with Gangotri Dham and Gartang Gali on the next day.

Tips

  • The valley is high and dry. Carry water, sunscreen, sunglasses and a warm layer.
  • There are no shops or fuel in the valley.
  • Mobile networks are weak or absent beyond Bhairon Ghati.
  • Photography near army posts may be restricted. Follow instructions at checkposts.
