Hotels Near Gangotri: Where to Stay on the Gangotri Route
Gangotri town has only basic lodges and the temple is closed half the year. Here is an honest look at where pilgrims actually stay, from Gangotri itself to Harsil and Uttarkashi, and which base suits your trip.
Searching for a hotel near Gangotri usually turns up a mix of tiny lodges, ashrams and listings that are closed for winter. We run a riverside resort on the same road, 95 km below the temple, and our guests ask this question every season. This is the answer we give them.
Your three options at a glance
| Where you stay | Distance to Gangotri | What to expect | Good for |

| Harsil / Dharali | About 25 km | A handful of homestays and small hotels in an apple valley. Quieter and greener. | Couples, nature lovers, 2-night trips |

Staying in Gangotri town
Gangotri is a pilgrim village, not a hotel town. Rooms are simple, many have shared or bucket hot water, and electricity can be patchy. Everything shuts when the temple closes around Diwali and reopens in late April. If you want the first aarti of the day or you are starting the Gaumukh trek, one night here makes sense. Book ahead in May and June, when rooms fill with yatra groups.
Staying in Harsil
Harsil sits in a wide valley of deodar and apple orchards, roughly an hour below Gangotri. It is colder and quieter than Uttarkashi and the stays are small and few. It is a lovely place to spend a night on the way up. See our Harsil tour for how we plan it.
Staying in Uttarkashi (the practical base)
Most families and older travellers sleep in Uttarkashi and do Gangotri as a long day trip: leave by 5 or 6 am, reach the temple by mid-morning, stop at Gangnani hot springs and Harsil on the way back, and be at dinner by evening. You get a proper bed, a hot shower, reliable food and a hospital in town if anyone feels the altitude.

Tips for booking a stay near Gangotri
- Check opening dates. Gangotri temple opens on Akshaya Tritiya (late April or early May) and closes on the day after Diwali.
- Keep a buffer day. In July and August landslides can close NH-34 for hours.
- Carry warm clothes. Gangotri is at about 3,100 m. Nights are cold even in June.
- Book direct. Calling a hotel usually gets a better rate than an app, and you can ask about hot water and heating.
