Why this temple matters

Uttarkashi literally means "Kashi of the North". Just like Varanasi, the town sits where the Ganga, here called the Bhagirathi, flows between two streams, the Varuna and the Assi. At its heart is the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of the most important Shiva temples in Garhwal. Local tradition holds that Shiva will make Uttarkashi his home in the Kali Yuga, and pilgrims on the way to Gangotri stop here for darshan before heading up the valley.

The temple is built in the traditional Himalayan stone style with a tall shikhara. The present structure is believed to have been restored in the 19th century under the Tehri royal family, on a site that is far older.

The Shakti Temple and its trishul

Directly opposite stands the Shakti Temple, home to a huge metal trishul about 6 metres tall, believed to be nearly two thousand years old and to carry ancient inscriptions. Devotees say it trembles at the touch of a single finger but will not move when pushed with full force. Visit both temples together.

Visiting tips

  • Go early or for the evening aarti. Mornings are calm; evenings have bells, lamps and chanting.
  • Dress modestly and remove shoes before entering. Photography inside the sanctum is usually not allowed.
  • Mahashivratri and the month of Shravan bring large crowds and special pujas.
  • Walk to the ghats. Manikarnika Ghat is a few minutes away for a quiet moment by the river.

How to reach

The temple is in the old part of Uttarkashi, a short walk from the main market and about 1 km from the bus stand. From Shiv Parivar Resort it is a 10-minute drive and we can arrange a taxi. Coming from outside the district? See Delhi to Uttarkashi and Rishikesh to Uttarkashi.
