Why Mukhba matters

Every year, when Gangotri Dham closes after Diwali, the idol of Goddess Ganga travels down in a decorated palanquin to the Ganga temple in Mukhba. She stays here through the winter and returns to Gangotri on Akshaya Tritiya. The priests who serve at Gangotri come from Mukhba, so the village is closely tied to the shrine. For pilgrims who cannot visit in summer, Mukhba offers darshan of Maa Ganga all winter.

The village

Mukhba is a traditional Garhwali village of stone and carved wooden houses, set on a slope above the river with views across to Harsil's orchards and the snow peaks behind. It is peaceful and slow, and a good place to see mountain village life.

How to visit

Drive up the Gangotri highway towards Harsil. A short road crosses the river to Mukhba. In winter, check snow conditions before travelling; the road up to Harsil is usually kept open, but heavy snow can cause delays. We help guests plan winter trips and arrange vehicles with experienced hill drivers.

Winter visit tips

  • Dress very warmly; temperatures drop well below freezing at night.
  • Travel in daylight and keep a buffer day for snow.
  • Combine with Dharali and the Harsil orchards, and stop at Gangnani hot springs on the way.
  • Stay in Uttarkashi, where it is warmer, and do Mukhba as a day trip.

Where to stay

Shiv Parivar Resort is on the banks of the Bhagirathi at Bhareti Chungi, New Bypass Road, 3 km before Uttarkashi town on the Gangotri highway.
