The route

Harsil is on the same road as Uttarkashi to Gangotri. Follow NH-34 up the Bhagirathi past Maneri and Bhatwari to Gangnani (about 45 km), climb to Sukki Top, and drop into the valley at Harsil. The last stretch opens up into deodar forest and apple orchards along the river.

What to do in Harsil

Apple orchards: August to October is harvest time, and growers sell straight from the trees.

Mukhba: the winter home of the Ganga idol, across the river. See Mukhba village.

Gartang Gali: the restored cliffside walkway near Lanka. See Gartang Gali.

Treks: the Kyarkoti trek starts from Harsil, and Nelang valley is reached from Bhaironghati with a permit.

When to go

April to June is green and mild. August to October is apple season with clear post-monsoon skies. December to February brings snow; the road can close for a day or two after heavy falls, so keep your plan flexible. July and August carry landslide risk on the way up.
