Why come via Haridwar?
Haridwar has far more trains than Rishikesh, including overnight trains from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and much of North India. Arrive in the early morning and you can be in Uttarkashi by afternoon. Many pilgrims also take a dip at Har Ki Pauri before starting the hills.
By road
From Haridwar it is about 25 km to Rishikesh. From there NH-34 climbs to Chamba, runs along the Tehri lake past Chinyalisaur, and follows the Bhagirathi from Dharasu to Uttarkashi. By bus
Buses to Uttarkashi leave Haridwar's main bus stand, near the railway station, mostly between early morning and mid-morning. In the yatra season there are extra services. If you miss them, take a bus to Rishikesh and connect from there. The trip takes 7–8 hours.
By taxi
A private taxi from Haridwar is the most comfortable, especially for families with luggage. We can arrange a pickup from Haridwar station so a driver is waiting when your train arrives.
Tips
- Choose a train that reaches Haridwar by 7–8 am so you drive the hills in daylight.
- In the monsoon, check road status on NH-34 before you leave.
- Keep snacks and motion sickness tablets for the hill section.
