The route
From Mussoorie take the road east towards Suwakholi, then down through the forested ridges to Chinyalisaur on the Tehri lake. At Dharasu you join NH-34 and follow the Bhagirathi to Uttarkashi. The road is narrower than the Rishikesh route but quieter and greener.

Driving tips
Leave Mussoorie by 8 am so you finish the hill section in daylight.
Fuel up in Mussoorie; pumps are scarce until Chinyalisaur.
In July and August check for landslides before you set out, and keep a spare day.
Carry motion sickness tablets. The road has many bends.
